March 4, 2007 Ending hunger in Minnesota

This year marks the 25th year of the Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign. The goal this year is to raise 9 million pounds and dollars for 300 food shelves across the state. While understanding that 25 years of people going hungry in Minnesota is nothing to celebrate, the work of the Minnesota FoodShare is. Sue Kainz, campaign coordinator of Minnesota Foodshare joins our conversation to talk about the state of hunger in Minnesota and how each of us can help mae sure no one goes hungry in our state.

Is our own prosperity and need to financially succeed part of God’s plan for us? What does the bible say about our relationship with material good and how does it affect our commitment to the “least of these?” In today’s show we are joined by Rev. Dr. Robert Franklin is a Presidential Distinguished Professor of Social Ethics at Emory University, Atlanta and author of the recently released book, Crisis in the Village: Restoring Hope in African American Communities. and who recently penned the article “Gospel of Bling,” focusing on the effects of the “prosperity gospel,” on the historical black church and its leaders.

Smith,Lutheran pastor at the University of Chicago, authors of Christians and a Land Called Holy: How We Can Foster Justice, Peace, and Hope. In the midst of headline after headline of violence in the Middle East workign or praying for peace may seem futile. In our show we will explore how to maintain hope and where it is that we can work for a lasting peace in the Holy Land.

February 4th, 2007 Children Left Behind

In Minnesota we have 70,000 children without health insurance on any given day. What are the implications and costs of leaving so many Minnesotan children without health insurance? Current legislation in Minnesota is attempting to provide universal healthcare for our Minnesotan children, titled the Children's Health Security Act. Laurie Beckman Yetzer of Congregations Concerned for Children has been working with a coaltiion of chidlren's advocacy groups to ensure that none of our children are left behind. Join our conversation as we explore what we can do to ensure the best for the children of Minnesota. To learn more about the act and its funding go to the Children's Defense Fund of Minnesota's Children's Health Security Act Action Center.
