Following last week’s discussion on the Sacred Season of Peacemaking, this week we’ll be talking about peace and violence in Islam. Imam Makrum El-Amin is the resident Imam at Masjid An-Nur in Minneapolis and will be apart of a discussion on peace and violence in Islam in about a month. Today we’ll talk with Imam El-Amin about why Islam is perceived to be a violent religion and why so few Americans know much about the religion. We’ll be talking about what Islam is and what the differences in sects actually mean.

September 23 - Sacred Season of Peacemaking - Rev Dr Tomas Duke

Last week both Ramadan and Rosh Hashanah began on the same day. It was a rare occurrence that has tremendous symbolic significance. The convergence happens every 30 years or so, since the holidays are based off different calendars. This year, the Interreligious Network has scheduled several event surrounding the convergence of holidays with the theme of peace.

Ramadan is the name of the ninth month on the Islamic calendar. Every day during the month, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk. They also spend more time connecting with other Muslims, strengthening family and community ties. Muslims believe that their holy book, the Qur'an, was first revealed during the month of Ramadan. The fasting season is seen as a time of spiritual cleansing and focuses on forming good habits and connecting with God.

Rosh Hashanah means new year. It marks the beginning of the new month, Tishrei, and the new year on the Jewish calendar. Rosh Hashanah marks the anniversary of the creation of the world, it commemorates when God begins to decide the fate of humans for the coming year. Jewish believers see it as a time to express gratitude and turn their attention to God. The whole season is focused on taking stock of the soul.

September 9 - Hurricane Katrina and Relief Efforts Today

Slightly over two years ago, Hurricane Katrina devastated the Gulf Coast, effectively destroying the city of New Orleans. A few weeks afterwards, swarms of volunteers from Minnesota and other states came down to volunteer their time and effort to help rebuild the area. This week, we'll be checking in to see how the work to rebuild the city and surrounding affected areas is coming along and what we can all do to band together to help finish the job we've started.

We'll be speaking with Tod Iseminger out of the Disciples Home Missions. Disciples Home Mission's Office of Disciples Volunteering and Week of Hurricane has launched a major, two-year Disciples Hurricane Recovery Initiative as part of the Disciples' long-term response to Hurricanes Katrina, Rita and other recent hurricanes and tropical storms.
