March 23 - Pluralism in America - Dr. Diana Eck

This week the Twin Cities Center for Religious Inquiry will host a public screening of a new documentary about religious diversity in America. "Pluralism in America" allows the viewer to see the United States through the prism of Dr. Diana Eck, Director of the Pluralism Project at Harvard University. Dr. Eck considers the essential question facing American society to be how Americans of all faiths and beliefs can engage with one another to shape a country of positive pluralism. Dr. Eck is the winner of a number of prestigious academic and literary prizes - and in 1998, President Clinton awarded her the National Humanities Medal. Her book "A New Religious America" earned this endorsement from journalist Bill Moyers: "This is a book I recommend to everyone I see."

March 16 - Building a Multicultural Diverse Congregation - Herb Perkins and Margery Otto

There's a new training program making waves in Minnesota - the Antiracism Study-Dialogue Circles. Graduates of this program are devoted advocates, crediting the experience with life-altering epiphanies. The Antiracism Study - Dialogue Circle ( ASDIC, "azdek") is a community of twelve to fifteen people who gather as a Circle to create supportive relationship as they explore the ways their social behaviors and identities have been formed in the context of race, and the practices of racism in our nation. ASDIC classes fill up quickly, and often have waiting lists. Fortunately, this month United Theological Seminary will be hosting a workshop led by founders of ASDIC - and this workshop is open to the public. Herbert Perkins and Margery Otto will tell us about the upcoming workshop - including practical tools to help congregations honestly address issues surrounding race. They will also share resources to help faith traditions build truly multicultural and diverse communities.

March 9 - Day on the Hill - Brian Rusche

Minnesota is a place of pioneering vision- from early ecumenical advocacy to progressive philanthropy. We are also home to the country's very first non-partisan, interfaith public-interest lobby group - the Joint Religious Legislative Coalition. Every spring the JRLC hosts their annual Day on the Hill - where participants gather for briefings on a variety of social justice issues, and then head up to the State Capitol to meet with legislators. This year the event will take place March 13th. It's a thrilling day of connecting and communing with fellow Minnesotans of many faiths, all working toward the common good.

Brian Rusche, Executive Director of the JRLC, will join Reverend Peg Chemberlin this week to talk about what's planned for this year's Day on the Hill.

March 2 - Minnesota Food Share March Campaign - Sue Kainz

Minnesota has a long track record of progressive philanthropy. Part of our generous culture is entwined with the history of Minnesota FoodShare, a project of the Greater Minneapolis Council of Churches. Each March, Minnesota FoodShare directs the largest food drive in the state (known as the March Campaign) and restocks more than 260 food shelves across the state. They recruit thousands of congregations, corporations, schools and civic groups to run local food and fund drives to aid in the effort. Join us this weekend to hear about the history of this tradition – and to learn how you can participate in this legacy of sharing God's gifts.

February 24 - Peace and War in the Heartland: the Minnesota 8 - Frank Kroncke

The tag "Minnesota 8" refers to a group of young men committed to working as peace activists - young men who paid a high price for their commitment. We'll be talking with Frank Kroncke, former monk and seminarian - and a member of the Minnesota 8. Today Frank is leading a group called "Peace and War in the Heartland" that's sponsoring a number of free public events. They include the world premiere of a new play entitled "Peace Crimes: the Minnesota 8 vs the war" commissioned by the History Theater, to be presented at the University of Minnesota. The U will also be hosting a speech by political activist Daniel Ellsberg at the Ted Mann Concert Hall. Other events are scheduled for Augsburg College, Macalester College, Metro State University, and the College of St. Catherine.

February 17 - Women Mystics in Christian History - Students from The College of St. Catherine's

The College of St. Catherine in St. Paul, Minnesota is the largest women's college in the nation. This Sunday host Rev. Peg Chamberlin will be joined by students from St. Kate's as we discuss a wide range of topics including this new generation's passion for social justice, feminist theology, and other issues related to women and spirituality - in particular, the subject of women mystics and the ways they transformed Christianity. Our guests are graduates of Dr. Shawn Madigan's course "Christian Women Mystics" where they studied remarkable women through the centuries - from ancient martyrs to contemporary visionaries.

February 10 - People of Faith at the Polls - Carroll Doherty from Pew Research Center, Washington D.C., and Dr. Kathryn Pearson from the University of Minnesota

Super Duper Tuesday is the closest thing we have to a national primary election. How do voters who identify themselves as members of faith communities influence our political landscape? What might we learn from the results of this week's primary elections and caucuses? How can people of faith best work toward common ground for the common good within the context of electoral politics? We'll examine these and other questions with expert Carroll Doherty from the Pew Research Center in Washington, D.C. Closer to home, we'll be joined by Dr. Kathryn Pearson, Professor of Political Science at the University of Minnesota. Please join us for thoughtful conversation as we debrief Super Duper Tuesday.
