May 4 - Welcoming Returning Veterans - Army Chaplain Vincent Hokkanen

No matter how any of us may view the political nature of war, we are all certainly called upon to offer support to our nation's veterans and their loved ones. We need concrete ways to give tangible help. What can each of us do to provide comfort, hospitality, and assistance to military families in need? How can we talk across ideological differences to find common values and hopes? This Sunday Army Chaplain Vincent Hokkanen will stop by to visit with us. Chaplain Hokkanen will talk about how deployment overseas impacts families here at home - and what each of us could be doing to offer peace and reconciliation.

April 27 - Aging & Spirituality - Kay Provine

Why is it that much of our culture is uncomfortable talking about aging? Here's a demographic that we will all belong to sooner or later – if we're lucky. Why are we afraid to talk about the closing chapters of our lives? Isn't it possible for our sense of our own mortality to actually enrich our spiritual vitality? What are the fourteen spiritual tasks we need to accomplish as we move toward what comes next?

Kay Provine is an ordained Episcopal priest who works as the director of spiritual life at Episcopal Homes, a continuing care community in the heart of the city. On May 6th, she'll lead a workshop on Aging & Spirituality at United Theologicial Seminary. This week, she'll join us to talk about how we might most fully enrich these last chapters of our lives – and the lives of those we love.

April 13 - The Gospel Truth: Progressive Faith Music - Susan Werner

The New Yorker Magazine calls award-winning musician Susan Werner a "... songwriter who brings literacy and wit back to popular song." Werner traveled the country visiting churches in her quest to create a collection of progressive gospel songs. Her new cd "The Gospel Truth" takes on the church in contemporary American life in a range of songs addressing organized religion, personal faith, and social responsibility. The Chicago Tribune wrote that this project was sure to confirm Werner's reputation as "one of the most innovative songwriters working today." On Friday, April 11th, Susan Werner will be performing live at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church. Later that weekend, she'll visit the local Air America studio to share her personal faith journey, give insight into her creative process, and update us on future projects.
