In 1973, Duluth became the site of a new movement in outreach ministry. It was then that ten churches in the central hillside community banded together to offer support services to the low-income residents of the area. That original group was named CHUM, standing for Central Hillside United Ministry. It was one of the first ecumenical social services organizations in the nation. In the thirty five years since then, CHUM has expanded the definition of its name to Churches United in Ministry - because the work they do has expanded beyond one neighborhood. The consortium of member churches is now a long list of Methodist, Lutheran, Catholic, Episcopal, Quaker, Baptist, all Presbyterian communities - all working for the common good of Duluthians in need. This week we'll be joined by Jim Soderberg, Executive Director of CHUM, and the pastor from one of CHUM's member congregations, Reverend Fred Lund from Eastside Community Church.
